FISHER’S FOUR

Bertie Fisher has been the most successful driver in the history of the Ulster International Rally. Encouraged by the organisers introduction of pacenotes in 1982, to combat illegal recceing, the Fermanagh driver entered his Mk II Ford Escort and beat the Sweden’s Per Ekland in a Toyota Celica.

He had to wait nine years before he sprayed the champagne again in 1991 driving a Ford Sapphire 4×4 Cosworth. Then three years later Bertie rolled his Subaru Impreza on the first stage, but in 1995 he was on a roll having won the ‘Circuit’ and Donegal in L555 FEL and he was fastest on all but one of the Ulster stages to take his third win.

He was back again in L555 FEL in 1996 to battle with the F2 Kit Cars which he beat by three minutes. But not before a backward journey into a concrete post had left his Impreza with a far from impressive rear end.
